The Marquise diamond cut has a fairly long history, dating back to 18th century France where King Louis XIV commissioned the design. Whether this is truth or myth is uncertain, but the story goes that Louis XIV asked for a diamond cut reminiscent of the smile of his mistress Marquise de Pompadour. The diamond's shape is like an oval with pointed extremities, resembling the shape of a pair of lips.

Today marquise diamond rings are popular items whose fans include many rich, famous, and influential people. The marquise cut diamond features 56 facets. Compare that to the princesss cut which has up to 144 facets, and you will understand why the princess is very brilliant why the marquise cut is much less so.

If Marquise diamonds are not so brilliant, why are they popular, do you ask? Well, one reason is that marquise diamond rings can help elongate your finger and make it look more slender. This could be one reason why image-conscious celebrities often prefer the marquise cut. Another reason people prefer the marquise is its price, as they generally cost 10-20% less than brilliant round cut diamonds.

The marquise cut has the tendency to make the diaond look larger and heavier than it really is, because of its elongated shape. This may be good for people who want to exhibit wealth that they don't exactly have!  It is often used to surround a center stone in a three stone ring as well, giving adding volume to the more brilliant center stone.

If you are a unique person who doesn't mind wearing something a little unconventional, then a marquise cut diamond ring could be a good choice for you.
