Being a complete coffee fiend, I need to have some great coffee by my side 24/7. I drink over 10 cups of coffee a day, a few cups in the morning, a few more in the afternoon, and even a couple in the evening. Is that overkill? Absolutely! I am, afterall, a coffee fiend.

But one of the problems with being an unrepentant coffee junkie is that you end up having pots of coffee sitting for hours at a time, which can result in some pretty unfresh-tasting coffee. The main cause of this is leaving a coffee pot on a heated burner for long periods of time, and of air creeping into the coffee. Because of this I will buy nothing other than a thermal carafe coffee maker in the future.

What is a thermal carafe, you ask? It is a coffee pot made of stainless steel, that maintains the heat of the coffee inside without needing a heated burner. These are like a thermos, which you may have used to keep your coffee warm outside of the house. Because no burner is used, you get a fresher, better-tasting coffee throughout the day. You can open the lid and pour yourself a cup several hours after brewing and it will taste like it was just made. Not all thermal carafes are equal, but on average they keep your coffee warm for 4-6 hours, and sometimes longer. And the
coffee's flavour will remain fresh even the next day.

Let's compare that with a regular glass carafe heated burner coffee maker. They can keep your coffee warm for hours, but it is at the expense of flavour. Every hour that passes makes the flavour taste more burned and pungent. I can personally notice the burned flavour after about an hour, and after 2 hours I'm no longer in drinking that coffee, so down the sink it goes! Because of the short life of the coffee I ended up making smaller amounts more frequently, which was a little bit of a hassle.

One thing I don't like about thermal carafe coffee makers is that you have to preheat the water before brewing your pot of coffee. If you are often in a hurry to leave the house in the morning, then this may cause you some problems. But other than that, they deliver higher quality coffee that you can enjoy throughout the day
